srvice caviar using mother of pearl

Utensil

While some people believe that caviar should only be eaten with non-metallic utensils, such as mother of pearl or glass spoons caviar can be eaten with any type of utensil except for silver. Caviar can cause the silver to tarnish, and it also oxidizes the caviar, so it is best to avoid using silver utensils when serving or eating caviar. On the other hand, a metal spoon does leave a metallic taste in our mouth which interferes with the caviar’s fine flavour. However, some people can accommodate the metal taste in their mouth.

Caviar can absorb the flavours of metals and other substances, the tins used to pack caviar are typically coated with a non-reactive material on the inside to prevent the caviar from coming into contact with the metal. This helps to ensure that the caviar retains its delicate and unique flavour profile. It is recommended that caviar is placed on top of shaved ice to keep it chilled and fresh until it is served and eaten.

eating caviar using hand

On the hand

The idea behind eating caviar off the hand is to minimize any other distractions or flavours and allow the focus to be solely on the caviar itself. However, this method can be messy and may not be preferable for everyone.

After placing the caviar on the back of your hand, allow it to acclimatize to your body temperature for a few seconds which can help bring out its flavours and aromas.

When you're ready to eat the caviar, it's best to avoid biting it, as it crushes the delicate texture and taste of the caviar. Instead, place the caviar in the middle of your tongue and press it gently against the roof of your mouth. Let the egg burst gently in your mouth, allowing you to fully experience its exquisite flavours.
